Believe it or not, this was the second business I started as a single mom (the first was a mobile catering truck).
I designed a flyer and faxed it to local businesses in the downtown area where I lived. I put together a "uniform" so the look was consistent like a real business. After adding some homemade labels which I applied to every product, I was ready to go.
The first orders were slow, which was a good thing for me because I didn't have much cash to work with.
I had enough starting income to tide me over until the word got out. I designed my menu by using one or two main items. For instance, a club sandwich requires ham and turkey so I knew I would have those ingredients and was able to make new sandwich
offers using those two main ingredients (hot ham and cheese, Turkey sandwich, etc.). Design special sandwiches and give them unique names. Listen to your clients and give them really fast service.
Work on getting a mailing list and start talking to your clients. Always, always, check out the competition and keep up on the latest trends.
Visit other restaurants and sandwich shops, you would be surprised at the ideas that come flowing after one of these visits. I call it a "Foodie Run". I have traveled across the country and checked out every small restaurant, deli, bake-shop and food joint that I could find.
